Berry varieties

Information about the berry varieties we grow.

Strawberries

Strawberries are planted by hand from small seedlings in early summer and produce a small harvest in the year of planting. The same seedlings produce berries for about 4 years. We use biodegradable plastic in the strawberry beds and wood chips and cut grass in the rows. An irrigation system has been installed in our new plantings.

Here is our recommended strawberry cake recipe.

Twist

An early variety whose harvest ripens significantly earlier than our other varieties.
Open growth habit, so it is easy to pick. The berries are firm, large, bright red and aromatic. Recommended for fresh use, but freezing is also possible.

Verdi

Large and sweet, Verdi ripens at the best strawberry season. The variety is vigorous and upright, with well-presented berries. The strawberries are deep red, conical and sweet. Suitable for fresh use and freezing.

Polka

Has long been a perennial favorite of strawberry varieties due to its traditional taste. The berries are sweet, round and deep red. Ripens in midsummer. Suitable for eating strawberries and freezing. Small Polka strawberries make the best strawberry jam. Polka as a variety is giving way to new varieties.

Raspberries

We grow two raspberry varieties: Ottawa and the old Norwegian variety. Ottawa is a sturdy, robust garden raspberry variety, and Norwegian is a slightly more relaxed growing variety. Both produce medium-sized, vibrantly aromatic berries in late July and August. The berries are suitable for both fresh consumption and freezing.

Blackcurrant

We grow the Scottish blackcurrant variety Ben Tron. It is upright and hardy in its growth habit. The berries are large and soft-skinned. The taste is sweet, mild and low in acidity. The berries are high in flavonoids and vitamin C. The harvest is early and is particularly suitable for fresh use and freezing. The taste of the berries does not suffer from freezing.
Blackcurrants are easy and quick to pick.

Other

Tilallamme on myös joitakin tyrnipensaita ja hunajamarjoja. Tyrniä kerätään syyskuussa tai lokakuussa ja hunajamarjoja jo mansikka-aikaan.
